Renesas electronics expects fire in the factory

Renesas electronics, a Japanese chip maker, said on Monday that it expects full production at its fire damaged plant to resume at the end of May, about a month ahead of its previous target at the end of June.

Hidetoshi Shibata, the company’s chief executive, introduced the latest development at a news conference on Monday.

On March 19, a fire broke out in the Naka chip factory of Renesas electronics in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, causing damage to a large number of 300 mm semiconductor chip production lines. The company initially estimated that 11 chip production equipment were damaged, but later found 17. This event has exacerbated the global chip supply crisis.

The plant has partially resumed production over the weekend, two days ahead of schedule. Renesas previously estimated that it would take about 100 days for the plant to fully resume production.
