Grupo Televisa, Mexico’s largest media group, is in talks with Univision communications, the parent company of the US Spanish free television network, to merge the world’s two largest Spanish media groups if a deal is reached, according to people familiar with the matter.
People familiar with the matter said that at present, the discussions between the two sides are still at an early stage and no final decision has been made. The possibility of a breakdown of the talks is not ruled out. As the matter has not yet been made public, the people familiar with the matter asked not to be named.
Televisa now owns 36% of the global television network. A deal between the two parties may need to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission.
